Cheran vs. Cartels

Published 1 Oct, 2026 09:01

Ten unarmed women stand in the path of a lorry carrying illegally logged timber. In 2011, their act sparked the uprising in Cheran – a Mexican town where a drug cartel had spent years destroying the forests and terrorizing local residents.

After receiving no help from the authorities, the townspeople block the roads into Cheran and form self-defense groups. Years later, they are still protecting the town and patrolling the surrounding forests. At what cost have the people of Cheran preserved their independence and kept the cartels from returning?

Watch “Cheran vs. Cartels” on RTD website and on RT’s live feed. The time of the broadcast is available on RT’s schedule page.
